Dr. Anjalé (AJ) D. Welton is currently a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Education, specifically the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (ELPA). Dr. Welton’s scholarship examines how educational leaders both dialogue about and address race and racism in their school communities. Her research specific to racial equity and justice also considers the role of student and community voice, leadership, and activism in education reform and transformation. Dr. Welton has a variety of professional educational experiences including public educator in Washington D.C. and Austin, Texas, coordinator of a leadership and empowerment program for urban youth, facilitator of professional development around race and racism, and published author (Strengthening Anti-Racist Educational Leaders: Advocating for Racial Equity in Turbulent Times and Anti-Racist Educational Leadership and Policy: Addressing Racism in Public Education authored with Dr. Sarah Diem of the University of Missouri).
Abby Koberstein is a doctoral candidate and teaching assistant for Dr. Welton in ELPA at UW-Madison. Abby worked as an elementary Spanish teacher for six years and within UW’s Division of Diversity, Equity and Educational Achievement prior to working with Dr. Welton. Additionally, she works with Dr. John B. Diamond as a research assistant. Her research focuses on the experiences and perspectives of white teachers who participate in required equity professional development in increasingly racially diverse suburban schools.
